Placement at Iowa:

At Iowa, we take seriously the placement of our PhDs in jobs both within and without academia.  A detailed job placement guide, replete with deadlines, sample applications, and advice on everything from generating the job application letter to negotiating one’s first job contract, is updated each year.  Two to three times a year, the job placement chair and committee hold forums that frequently feature guest speakers on topics such as interviewing, writing samples, and professionalism.  In late summer and fall, the chair and committee work individually with candidates on their application materials and hold mock job interviews each December. After the MLA convention, the department hosts mock job talks. The vital intellectual exchange between faculty and graduate students at Iowa also contributes to our excellent placement history.

Since 1995, candidates have accepted positions at institutions including CUNY Staten Island, Clemson University, Dalhousie University, Florida International University, Harvard University, Indiana State University, Kansas State University, Kent State University, Millsaps College, Penn State University, Rhodes College, Rice University, University of California-San Diego, University of Hawaii at Manoa, University of Maryland-Baltimore County, University of Mississippi, University of Nebraska-Omaha, University of Washington, Virginia Commonwealth University, Dalhousie University, Wake Forest University and West Virginia University.
